Time to Get Picking: Orchard Mob & Other Gleanings

August 10, 2010
by

Fruit trees are ripening as we speak, and that means the gleaning season is officially underway! We have our first gleaning event this Saturday August 14. To attend, please login to Volunteer Hub, where we will be posting events throughout the season. Go to “Events” and click “Sign Up” next to the event.

You’ve heard of crop mobs, right? We’re having an orchard mob! We are hosting an orchard gleaning at Rush City Orchard on August 21, 2010 with our partners at Second Harvest Heartland. Rush City is an hour north of the Twin Cities. Rush City Orchard has graciously donated much of their crop for the second year in a row. Last year, we picked 15,000 pounds of fruit in one weekend and we hope to do the same this year. There is a huge quantity of fruit available to bring to food shelves throughout the region, so the more pickers, the better.  To sign up for this event, login into Volunteer Hub.

Volunteers will need to arrange their own transportation, but are encouraged to carpool. Pack a picnic and bring friends and family. We can’t do this without you!

When: Saturday, 8/21/2010, 9 AM- 12 PM
Where: Rush City Orchard
Dogwood Ave
Rush City, MN 55069
Note: We will email directions to volunteers before the event.
Who: Everyone!

We hope you can find time in your busy summer schedules to help us get all this nutritious local fruit to folks at risk for hunger. We will be having regular scheduled gleanings on Thursday evenings, approximately 6-8 pm, and Saturday mornings, usually 9 am to noon. We will also be hosting some impromptu gleanings at different times, so check your email for information.

Directions to Rush City Orchard:

Take I-35 North from the Metro area. Exit onto Highway 361 (Exit 159) and turn right at the end of the ramp toward Rush City. Turn right at County Road 54 (S. Fairfield Ave) after approximately 0.4 mi. Turn right at County Road 7 (Rush Point Dr.) after approximately 0.5 mile. Travel approximately 3.4 miles and turn right onto Dogwood Ave. Dogwood becomes a gravel road and somewhat dead ends at a gate. Go through the gate and park along the sides of the road by the orchard.
