NRCS Welcomes Don Baloun as State Conservationist

April 29, 2010

“Take care of the land and the land will take care of us,” that was the message Minnesota’s new state conservationist, Don Baloun, delivered during the Natural Resource Conservation Service’s 75th Celebration.  Baloun was quoting one of the five principles from the founder of NRCS, Hugh Bennett.  NRCS, working in partnership with soil and water districts, other natural resource organizations, and producers, provides financial and technical assistance for working lands, encouraging such practices as wetland preservation, conservation easements and reduced tillage.

Whether in an urban garden or 1000 acres of production agriculture, our existence depends on the health of our soil and water.  Building on lessons learned during the 1930’s Dust Bowl and evolving with new technology and increased demands on our natural resource systems, conservation practices and protection of our soil and water remains a number one priority for a healthy and secure food system.
