A Helpful Guide to Grants for Sustainable Initiatives

March 8, 2010

For a comprehensive and accessible guide to many of the federal grant opportunities available for sustainable rural projects, check out Building Sustainable Farms, Ranches and Communities (PDF). The latest edition of the publication—which is the product of various U.S.D.A. agencies, in collaboration with the Michael Fields Agricultural Institute and the National Center for Appropriate Technology—provides information on 69 federal programs intended to foster sustainable initiatives in agriculture and forestry and encourage rural economic development. In addition to a general overview of the programs, the guide provides information about the level of assistance and restrictions for each program, strategies for project planning, and specific examples of how the various funding sources have been used in the past. Many of the programs have been around for a long time, but there are also some recent additions from the 2008 Farm Bill. The guide is a great place to start for anyone seeking funding for a project addressing community development, sustainable land management, or value-added agriculture and forestry.
